7 Arrested For Selling Cigarettes To Newark Minors

NEWARK (BCN) ? Seven people were arrested for allegedly selling cigarettes to minors during a two-month undercover operation conducted in Newark, police reported.

Throughout April and May, minors between the ages of 15 and 17 years old, who were working under supervision of Newark police officers, attempted to buy cigarettes from 40 retail establishments in the city.

The seven employees who allegedly sold cigarettes to the children were cited.

Although police conducted an awareness campaign to remind businesses of the state's tobacco laws, the city's rate of tobacco sales to minors was at 17.5 percent, which is above the state average of 10.2 percent.
