Cigarettes & discos: explosive dynamites!
Jan 11, 2008, 10:15

That’s absolutely right! Some would consider my reasoning as too extreme, while others would agree with me. I guess I must provide a proper explanation. Let’s start with cigarettes. Tobacco has already made a huge number of victims and is slowly (but surely) ruining the lives of millions of smokers as well as affecting non-smokers who happen to be beside a stupid smoker’s smoke. What is more alarming is the constant increase in female smokers. They should be ashamed of themselves as smoking may cause serious damage to any future baby.

Everybody agrees that smoking is bad for health. Smoking causes cancer, heart disease and bronchitis (it’s written on cigarette boxes) but nobody does anything to stop it, ban it and eradicate it from the surface of the earth! Where are the NGOs? Have they disappeared? They just waste time & money and don’t have any concrete plans. The Government gets over 800 millions each year on the heads of cigarette-smokers and sees it as a chance to reap profits from a sector without having to invest anything. But what about the “after-effects”? There will be more pressure for public funds and space on our, already not so spacious, hospitals with illnesses such as lung cancer, psoriasis, coronary artery disease.

Smokers would do anything for a cigarette; the foul-smelling smoke smells like perfume for them. He usually loves to boast about how many cigarettes he uses per day. Some smoke 3-4 cigarettes, others 2-3 boxes per day! Great, superb, go on like that and you will end up in hospital sooner or later. Smoking one to four cigarettes a day almost triples a person's risk of dying of heart disease. It can shorten life by 14 years or more. Mauritius life expectancy is around 72.88 years and without those dumb smokers (sincerely they ARE really dumb!) it would have been 90.40 years. A world record! How proud we would have been. Those who smoke will say that smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal. It is a fact that almost no smoker begins as an adult. Statistics show that about nine out of 10 tobacco users start before they're 18. Pressure from friends, the urge to stay in the trend and curiosity are the main causes. Another reason people start smoking is because their family members do. A father smoking in front of his child should have no right to scold him/her for smoking as he himself has given the bad example.

First-time smokers often feel pain or burning in the throat and lungs, and some people feel sick or throw up the first few times they try tobacco. But after they get used to it, it is then that all problems and complications start. These include amongst others:

Bad skin. Because smoking restricts blood vessels, it can prevent oxygen and nutrients from getting to the skin - which is why smo-kers often appear pale and unhealthy. An Italian study also linked smoking to an increased risk of getting a type of skin rash called psoriasis.

Bad breath. All those cigarettes leave smokers with a condition called halitosis, or persistent bad breath.

Foul-smelling clothes and hair. The smell of stale smoke tends to linger - not just on people's clothing, but on their hair, furniture and cars. And it's often hard to get this smell out.

Reduced athletic performance. People who smoke can't compete with non-smoking peers because the physical effects of smoking - like rapid heartbeat, decreased circulation, and shortness of breath - impair sports performance.

Greater risk of injury and slower healing time. Smoking affects the body's ability to produce collagen, so common sports injuries, such as damage to tendons and ligaments will heal more slowly in smo-kers than nonsmokers.

Increased risk of illness. Studies show that smokers get more colds, flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia than non-smokers. People with certain health conditions, like asthma, become more sick if they smoke (and often if they're just around smokers). These diseases limit a person's ability to be normally active – and can be fatal. Each time a smoker lights up, that single cigarette takes 5 to 20 minutes off that person's life!

Let’s now tackle the disco issue

A discothèque is an entertainment venue or club with recorded music played by disc jockeys through a PA system, rather than an on-stage band. The word is derived from the French word discothèque (nightclub). Discothèque is a portmanteau coined around 1941 from disc and bibliothèque (library). Discotheques originated in occupied Paris during the Second World War. The Nazis banned jazz and closed many of the dance clubs, breaking up jazz groups and driving fans into illicit cellars to listen to recorded music.

Here, in Mauritius, we have many nightclubs where young adults take the opportunity to unwind their supposedly stressed mind (really!?) and where they can let off steam. I never could figure out how someone can feel relaxed while being bombarded by loud music, heavy smoke and darkening lights in a stuffy place? If our young adults really wanted to release the pressure, I would advise them to go and climb Candos Hill or Signal Mountain instead of acting like idiots in dark and unwelcoming places. Each one has his/her habits and preferences and I respect that, but it is high time that disco goers make a self assessment of their lives.

Discotheque music is not music in your ears. Continuous disco music at excessive levels is a threat to your hearing. According to the Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health, following a study on the effects of discotheque noise, it was found that 82% of people who have been to noisy discotheques find their hearing has deteriorated. 76% of those going to less noisy discotheques have experienced similar symptoms. The human ear was not created to withstand continuous noise levels above 85 decibels. All those who complained about some kind of hearing problem recovered after two days. The study did not deal with long-term effects, but research indicates that persistent loud music can seriously affect a person's hearing ability. Sometimes the damage is not felt until years later.

In the end, we just wonder why people continue to do things that are seriously damaging their own health and body. Why pa-rents continue to smoke when they know quite well they can have a bad influence on their children? Why do people continue to waste their money on cigarettes when they know that they are only inviting death? And why do people go in stuffy and dark places to relax when it is much better to climb up a hill in an open environment? All these questions do not have any specific answers but it is high time for us to find them . . . !!
