Quitline Helps Smokers Kick the Habit
Dec 14, 2007, 10:27

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Tobacco users say quitting is a tough thing to do, but over the past couple of months Tennesseans have been turning to a quit-line that is making a huge difference.

More and more people are kicking the smoking habit for good. The number of calls to a hotline for those interested in quitting has seen a dramatic increase.

The Tennessee Tobacco Quitline hasn't been around long, but it seems since Tennessee increased the sales tax on cigarettes, smokers are thinking twice before lighting up.

Smoking has been a big part of Linda Harris's life. She had the habit over 44 years until she heard a commercial while relaxing on a Sunday afternoon.

"I had heard it on the radio, so i listened real close and wrote the number down," said Linda Harris

That's when she decided to make a life changing phone call. The Tennessee Tobacco Quitline has been in operation for 16 months, but this past July the amount of calls coming in increased from 400 to 700 a month after a state tax on cigarettes jumped from 20 to 62 cents a pack.

"We saw another dramatic jump in call volume with the implementation of the non-smoker protection act that went into effect October 1st," said Donna Henry, Director of Health Promotion.

Since then, the Quitline has received over 3,000 calls a month.

"We take it as a sign Tennessee is truly interested in quitting tobacco," said Henry.

Once a tobacco user is enrolled in the program he or she will receive one on one counseling from a quit coach over a 12 month period, a quit kit will come in the mail along with information on how to deal with cravings.

"We know for tobacco users, cigarettes users in particular it takes 7 to 10 times before they can manage to quit," said Henry.

It didn't take that many phone calls for Linda Harris, but she's been smoke free for a year now, closing the door on a bad habit that could have eventually killed her.

Linda Harris said she does get urges every once in a while, but then she thinks about how good her life has been since she quit smoking. The state said about 25 percent of all Quitline callers end up kicking the habit for good. In November, they had more than 12,000 callers.
