A recent Flyer News article claims that tobacco addiction may be perpetuated by a gene. This news isn’t profound; it gives us a stronger reason to ensure our campus is educated about the deadly effects of tobacco. The fact is 85 percent of smokers regret starting to smoke. It’s imperative that our fellow students make a conscious choice about whether they want to pick up that cigarette and ignite their tobacco addiction gene. The author states that tobacco advertisements make smoking seem “cool.” Of course you think it’s cool; that’s exactly what the tobacco companies want us to think. Tobacco companies purposefully target college students. Why? Because we are the youngest age group to which they can legally market their products. If we start smoking now, let’s just say two cigarettes a week, we have a 50 percent chance of showing signs of addiction. Once we’re addicted, we are buyers for life. That’s exactly what tobacco companies want. We, as UD students, hope everyone knows and understands the health risks associated with smoking. Will smoking change the course our lives? Yes. For all of those graduating seniors looking for jobs in Ohio, an employer can legally deny employment to a smoker. My aunt was diagnosed with lung cancer after years of smoking and years of trying to quit. I have felt the pain of the toll of tobacco personally.
