Tobacco Check Nets One Violator

Westport police and state officials today conducted an unannounced compliance check of stores selling tobacco and found one violator among the 14 visited. The inspection, carried out in cooperation with the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program, was to determine compliance with state laws concerning the prohibition of the sale of cigarettes and/or tobacco products to those under 18. Under the direction and supervision of state investigators, an underage youth entered the establishments and attempted to purchase tobacco products. Of the 14 stores checked, only one, the Merritt Country Store, 337 Main St., was in violation and the offending clerk was issued an infraction in the amount of $200, a news release said. Police said it found the following businesses were in compliance with the law: Christie’s Town Mall, Inc., 161 Cross Highway; Achorn’s Pharmacy, 166 Main St.; CVS, 397 Post Road East; Westport Sunoco, 322 Post Road East; Shaws, 605 Post Road East; Cumberland Farms, 690 Post Road East; Calise’s Food Market, 734 Post Road East; Walgreens, 880 Post Road East; Westport Self-Serve, 1060 Post Road East; Castle Wine and Spirits, 1439 Post Road East; Westport Amoco, 1510 Post Road East; Greens Farms Getty, 1830 Post Road East; and Walgreen’s, 1870 Post Road East.
