Bakersfield could be the fifth city in the county to crack down on local businesses selling cigarettes and other tobacco products to children.
Wednesday night the Tobacco Free Coalition of Kern County asked the City Council to consider a Tobacco Retailer's Permit Ordinance.
It would require business owners to apply for a special permit to sell tobacco products. That money would go toward mandatory training for store owners and managers, and store inspections.
Other cities that have already adopted the ordinance: Wasco, Mcfarland, Tehachapi, and California City.
