UK smokers spend $175m trying to quit

LONDON, MAY 24: British smokers spent £93 million ($175 million) on nicotine replacement products such as gum and patches last year as more people tried to kick the butt, according to a report by London-based market research company Mintel.Sales of the products rose 50% between 2001 and 2005. Mintel estimates annual sales will reach £141 million in the next five years, a rise of 45%.Of the 31% of smokers who have tried to quit with the products, 28% used a patch. Over the same period, sales of duty-paid cigarettes fell 12% to 49 billion cigarettes a year. Sales of non-duty-paid cigarettes fell 19% in the period, and now account for 28% of the market, Mintel said.
