Cigarettes adverts may be banned once and for all

Another "prohibitive" law was introduced to the State Duma. The member of the Federation Council Andrey Ichshuk suggests total banning of adverts of tobacco, tobacco goods and smoking requisites. Apart from total ban of advertisement Ichshuk proposes to stretch a caution message on packs of cigarettes from 4 to 50% of their surface. Some experts believe that the true initiator of the ban turned to be a forceful business lobby promoted by big tobacco companies. That is the way they want to limit the number of possible small entrepreneurs at the market. Advertising business representatives in their turn are sure that the ban is just a part of a normal evolutionary process. All mature markets went through it; the ban has its own advantages, as smoking is harmful indeed. Nevertheless there are at least two essential disadvantages: firstly, the income received by mass media from adverts will be considerably reduced; secondly, major tobacco companies can use their chance to limit the competition.
