Alcohol and tobacco tax may dip in Britain

LONDON, Nov. 12 (UPI) - Consumers in Britain may soon be able to buy reduced-price cigarettes and alcohol delivered from mainland Europe. The Sunday Telegraph said the European Court of Justice is considering a test case of whether goods delivered from other European Union countries to Britain should only cost the duty tax from the item's country of origin. This could result in drastic price cuts, bringing the cost of cigarettes to a fraction of what they previously were, the report said. The Telegraph reported businesses as gearing up for the change. Ferry companies who have previously relied on "booze cruises" may be hit hard. The British Retail Confederation is warning that British companies may lose out due to the imbalance in duty rates.
